Inspiration & History

Chief J O AjibolaThe inspiration to launch Ago-Iwoye.Org came from my late grandfather the Chief J. O. Ajibola, Moyegeso of Ago-Iwoye. Chief J. O. Ajibola “Papa” was an inspiring figure to all and sundry especially his family. He was a man devoted to his family, career, sports, and his birthplace AGO-IWOYE. He took great delight in ensuring that all the members of his family know where they came from, this was a passion he kept till he eventually slept in the Lord.

One of my recollections of him is the family get-together held every December at Ago-Iwoye (which is still honored till date). To the family members, this was an event you dare not miss no matter where you reside. It was and still is, a time of grace and celebration.

We all look forward to meeting members of the family that we probably haven’t seen in a year, the new additions to the family are acknowledged and the news about “the good, the bad, the ugly and other etceteras” are shared by all. It was also an occasion to celebrate each others successes and new beginnings. The day usually ends with a family photo session. At that time, I did not think much about this event until I got to the United Kingdom and realized the importance and benefit of family history and heritage.

The United Kingdom is a country well known for the preservation of history, and you can find the history of just about anything in her archives, and it is this rich heritage that makes the United Kingdom stand out from all other countries.

It is up to you and me to live up to the legacy that was left for us, and to leave a legacy that is worthy of our children and the future generations.

Papa Ajibola wrote so many books during his lifetime, A “Brief History of AgoIwoye”, being one of them. Most of the data about our town will be referenced from his book “A Brief History of Ago-Iwoye by J O Ajibola”, a gold mine for the future generation. The book is a collection of lecture notes delivered by him to a youth club at Ago-Iwoye Court Hall on Friday 30th December 1966. The Book was prefaced by D M O Fibigbade the then Ebumawe of Ago-Iwoye. Some of the data was passively written, but I have decided to upload the data online as he wrote it.

As we go forward we will make reference to other related books and materials as they become available.

Books are the legacies that a great genius leaves to mankind, which are delivered down from generation to generation as presents to the posterity of those who are yet unborn. Joseph Addison.

“AgoIwoye.Org” which has now evolved to “Agoiwoye The legend” has grown from its humble beginnings in April 2009. It will from henceforth focus on the preservation of AgoIwoye History, African culture, a legacy of our forefathers for the future generation, a point of reference for students and scholars and an avenue to encourage others like “you” to not only emulate their achievements but make a difference that will effect the next generation.

I strongly believe that leaving a legacy is the essence of our being.

The “Agoiwoye The Legend” is therefore dedicated to the memory of my grandfather the late Chief J O Ajibola, for the notable contribution to our birth place AGO-IWOYE and my parents Late Mr. Ayodele Ajibola and Late Mrs. Felicia Olaide Ajibola (nee Onalaja) for bringing forth the vessels that God used to accomplish this task.
